"
Brendan Shanahan is the new president and alternate governor of the Toronto Maple Leafs, the team announced Friday morning. He will assume his new duties immediately, but will be formally introduced during a press conference Monday in Toronto.
Shanahan had been with the NHL since 2009, most recently serving as NHL Senior Vice President, Player Safety and Hockey Operations. He joins the Maple Leafs to oversee all team operations, according to a release from the club.
This season, the Maple Leafs appeared headed for a second straight trip to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but an eight-game losing streak which began in mid-March severely hurt their chances. Toronto was eliminated on Tuesday, when it lost 3-0 to the Tampa Bay Lightning, and has made the playoffs once in the past nine seasons. The Maple Leafs finish the 2013-14 season with a road game against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday.
Shanahan, 45, earned three Stanley Cup Championships with the Detroit Red Wings as well as gold medals with Team Canada at the 1994 World Championships, the 2002 Winter Olympics and the 1991 Canada Cup. He scored 656 goals in his career and is the only player in NHL history with more than 600 goals and 2,000 penalty minutes in a career. Shanahan was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on July 9, 2013.
He retired in November 2009 and joined the NHL the next month as vice president of hockey and business development."
Intressant? Mycket.
