NBA owners move off hard-cap demand
By Mark J. Miller
The talks between NBA owners and players continue Wednesday with the new knowledge that the owners are open to moving off their position that there needs to be a hard-and-fast salary cap, according to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski.
"The owners proposed at Tuesday's negotiating session an idea similar to the current system that allows teams to pay a luxury tax for going over the cap," Wojnarowski writes. The big change would come for clubs that go over that cap, according to Wojnarowski's sources: Instead of the current dollar-for-dollar luxury tax for teams that go over the cap, "now there would be ultra-punitive measures against higher-spending teams," Wojnarowski reports.
One source tells Wojnarowski that the proposal "would still have the affects of a hard cap."
If the two sides don't make significant progress before week's end, the league will "likely suspend the last two weeks of October games," Wojnarowski notes.
